As computers translate quickly and accurately, learning foreign languages is a waste of time? To what extent do you agree or disagree?
There are a lot of different views on this topic. On the one hand, some people believe that in relation to modern technologies it will be unnecessary to learn foreign languages in the near future. Whereas, on the other hand, the second part of our society feels that this question is not so trivial and we need to consider the topic deeply. We will try to discuss both views below.
First of all, I want to admit that it is really useful to have an opportunity to translate any information immediately and I hope that we do it in the near future. It is clear that it increases our abilities to translate and communicate, in general. I believe that with this approach we will be smarter and more adaptive in all complex situations in our life.
But from another perspective, it is absolutely understandable that this approach covers only pretty simple and basic situations. I mean that really complex and sensitive things like poetry, for instance, won’t be achievable for us regardless of modern technologies. Moreover, it is valuable to realize that a language is not only about translation but also about different views and different perspectives on our world. Consequently, language is the simplest way to understand other cultures, other countries, and other peoples.
In conclusion, I want to say that the precise answer to these questions really depends on your needs. What do you want from a foreign language? A language is a tool and this instrument can be used in different ways. In my opinion, we should continue to learn foreign languages as they have an enormous positive impact not only on our brains but also on our lives, in general. I believe that foreign languages are great helpers to gain our goals with flying colors.
